Hip-Hop Classics Revisited: Style Wars

In this edition of Classics Revisited, Indie Planet TV takes a step back in time to share the first hip-hop documentary, Style Wars (1982).

Style Wars the original Hip Hop Documentary now available on DVD.

This documentary shot by Henry Chalfant and Tony silver for PBS chronicles the hip-hop element of graffiti in the height of its popularity. Style Wars is shot throughout New York City during the late 70's and early 80's.

The documentary covers all aspects, surprisingly portraying writers as artists and goes over to Mayor Ed Koch and his campaign to thwart graf writers at any cost.

Those hip-hop fans who came after the graf era can appreciate how relevant and integrated graffiti was with b-boys, DJs, and the MC to form hip-hop as a total culture. Style Wars caputres the essence of hip-hop.

Rock Steady Crew is featured in the documentary as well as Treach Three, Flash and a very young DJ Kay Slay.
