DJ Spooky Organizes NYU panel to Discuss Africa's Hip Hop History

On Friday I've organized a panel at NYU with the Museum for African Art on hip hop videos throughout the continent. If you have friends who are into this kind of thing, please forward the info. We flew in several really interesting folks from different regions of the continent, and we'll be screening rare video material from the history of the hip hop movement in Africa. The panel looks at the history of cinema on the continent and how people tell stories with contemporary tools like high definition cameras and cell phones. From Quicktime to Ubuntu software, Africa has definitely been changing!
Please pass the info on!

Evolving the Network: Politics, Culture, and Consciousness
The Obama campaign shows that the power and influence of computer networks continues to grow, as a political and cultural force, while music and video downloading is transforming the arts and culture industry. Web 2.0 tools are evolving consciousness, creating new social and spiritual possibilities. Laura Dawn, the cultural director of MoveOn.org, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, musician, writer, and filmmaker; and Daniel Pinchbeck, author and editorial director of Reality Sandwich, will discuss the transfigured landscape of our new networked culture, its potentials and pitfalls. Can virtual tools rescue us from the political and ecological abyss of a post Peak Oil world? Moderated by Reality Sandwich's publisher Ken Jordan.

The event will then open up into a big crazy party!!!
