Romeo and Master P Create The Next Big Children's Educational Television Show, and Introduce Their Character Gee Gee The Giraffe at Earth Day Event
Student athlete, teen superstar, and award-winning entertainer Romeo Miller and entrepreneur P. Miller (Master P) welcomed over 20,000 kids to the Children's Earth Day festival on April 27, 2008 at STAR ECO Station, an exotic wildlife animal rescue facility.
Romeo Miller received the highest award, the STAR Academics and Literacy Success Award in recognition of his academic achievements, commitment to the community, and his efforts in helping educate children worldwide. P. Miller was also granted the STAR Ambassador of Education Award for his advocacy of education and social responsibility. Romeo and Master P made history as the first hip-hop artists to receive awards of this magnitude in the educational system.
Accompanying Romeo and Master P, was Gee Gee the Magical Giraffe – the main character of an educational children's book and cartoon developed by Romeo. Master P, Romeo, and Gee Gee signed autographs, took photos, read stories, and educated children about Earth Day and the merits of recycling.
Romeo created the character Gee Gee the Giraffe in order to connect with urban youth, make learning fun, and provide a positive character for them to relate to. Gee Gee the Giraffe is reminiscent of other children's characters such as Barney and Dora the Explorer.
"If you reach kids with a positive message and instill the importance of education when they're young, they'll have that mentality for the rest of their life," said Romeo. "Gee Gee is going to be a true role model and teach kids trough music, books, song, dance, live action, and animation.
"Even though I'm growing up, I still love the kids – everything I do is for the development of young minds. My Nickelodeon show has taught me a lot, but I can't stay young forever. Gee Gee a way of staying connected my younger fan base. I've also teamed up with my younger sister, Itali Miller, who will write the books, and top cartoonists, Ryan Hutchinson and Olatokunbo Betiku, who will animate the series."
"There just aren't enough of these positive characters out there for our kids to look up to and learn from," said Master P. "Gee Gee is more important than any record or movie we've made. Romeo has inspired me to develop educational characters of my own. Instead of going into the booth to rap, I'll be in the booth lending my voice to a cartoon character that can make a difference. I'm doing something I love and it's positive, too.
"I've always wanted my kids to be better than me and get a better education. I come from the streets and I was able to change my life and most people I've talked to in the hood want their kids to get a better education, too. The more educated we are, the more lives we save."
While Romeo gets ready to head off to college at USC this fall, Gee Gee will be hitting the road, stopping at schools, community centers, theatres, shopping malls, amusement parks, and TV stations. Look for the first Gee Gee the Giraffe cartoon on DVD, and a film coming to theatres in 2009.
